Theresa Concordia Mengs

German, 1725-1808

Theresa gazes at us with a portrait of her sister hovering over her left shoulder. That she is shown with a family member alludes to her career, which largely centered around the activity of her family. Information about her is scant, but we do know that she received some training along with her brother, Raphael Mengs, a portrait artist. Both were trained in a realistic Neo-classical style, but it is safe to assume that Theresa’s training was limited in extent, format, and material. Her brother is known for his large-scale oil paintings, while her existing works are in pastel. Theresa eventually married another artist, and was able to continue her career by teaching the appropriate medium of pastel to young women in Rome.
